Tom Hall helps us get fit in 2023
We met with Tom Hall to discuss his fitness centre and to see what made him stand out as a leading fitness expert in Surrey over the last 20 years. Running a business, especially a fitness centre, has its challenges, so we wanted to see what motivated Tom and how he is making a difference in people’s lives.
So let’s get to it and find out what Tom had to say to inspire us to get fit in 2023.
Question
What made you decide to become a fitness instructor?
Answer
I have always enjoyed fitness, in particular, weightlifting as my knowledge and passion grew, I wanted to pass that on to others.
Question
What qualifications do you need to be a fitness instructor?
Answer
Basic level 2 qualification and Personal Level 3 upwards.
Question
What made you decide to invest in your own fitness centre?
Answer
After working in many fitness surroundings, I had built up an extensive clientele base, some who had been with me for 15 years or more. However, I felt leisure centres were restrictive for personal trainers and it was during lockdown, I ran my sessions out of a garage with second-hand equipment. It showed me the potential for group sessions, membership-free training, and how important health and fitness was to my clients, come wind, rain or shine they were there.
It gave me a clear vision on how I wanted my business model to look. I wanted a home-from-home personal gym with a personal service, somewhere people can come with no gym intimidation, a community feel and somewhere people looked forward to coming and felt good when they left.
Question
What is your vision for Tom Hall Fitness?
Answer
I currently run a number of options, including walk-ins where clients come for an induction, learn to use the equipment safely, and discuss any health conditions and fitness goals. They are then free to use the gym as they please with just a £3 charge per visit.
I also do 1:1 personal sessions, and group training and I have just launched Pump classes.
The short-term vision – given the economic climate is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to stay fit and healthy by growing walk-ins and group sessions. Group sessions are one of my favourites as it is cost-effective for all participants, it gives a community feel, we train, and we laugh. I get to introduce like-minded people who often become firm friends and the training sessions remain challenging and effective.
Question
Who can join Tom Hall Fitness?
Answer
Maybe joining is not quite the right expression. You do not have to ‘join’ as there is no monthly membership, just a one-off induction. I have people attending of all ages and all walks of life. There are no limits to your fitness level, if you are starting out or trained all your life, we have a programme and equipment that suits all.
Question
What type of classes do you offer? We have heard a lot about The Pump!
Answer
Currently, THF Pump is the only ‘class’ I run; this is based on 7 participants doing a pre-booked 10 week course. I run 2 a week and they sold out in 6 hours.
I also have a number of men’s, women’s, mixed group training sessions, and Saturday morning boot camps. These are drop-in sessions that anyone is welcome to join but require a prior conversation to ensure you are entered into the correct level/dynamic for you.
We have treadmills, bikes, fit balls, rowers, boxing options, an extensive range of weights, and even a ladies-only training room.
Question
What do you do outside of the gym for fun?
Answer
If I said cleaning the gym, would that sound weird ha! When I am not cleaning the gym I enjoy spending time with my family, we do lots of fun activities! I have a fiancé, 2 girls, and a stepdaughter, so I am a little outnumbered at home.
